| NAMN OCH BYGD is the world’s oldest specialized journal of place-name research and was for a long time the only one in its field. It was founded as early as 1913 by Jöran Sahlgren, a central figure in modern Swedish place-name scholarship. The journal is now published by the Royal Gustavus Adolphus Academy for Swedish Folk Culture, Uppsala, under the editorship of Thorsten Andersson. It appears once a year, a typical issue comprising some 200 pages. Most of the articles are written in the Scandinavian languages, but contributions in English and German also appear. Articles published in the Scandinavian languages are accompanied by summaries in English. NAMN OCH BYGD is a programmatic title. Place-names are seen in relation to bygd — settlement area or community — and thus as an integral part of the cultural landscape: they live in that landscape, and the landscape is in turn reflected in the names. The journal focuses on the Nordic cultural landscape, taking into account the native non-Scandinavian languages Finnish and Sami and their contact with the Scandinavian languages. NAMN OCH BYGD aims to take as broad a view as possible of place-names, ranging in its subject-matter from etymological analyses of individual names to discussions of the structure of our mental onomasticon. Since place-names have their basis in society, research in this field has a natural link to other disciplines. Place-names are, for example, a significant source of evidence for settlement history, the history of public administration and the history of religions. ‘Place-names and society’, as this approach can be summed up, is in fact a variation on the title of the journal. NAMN OCH BYGD includes a comprehensive review section with the emphasis on Nordic place-name scholarship, but also taking into account international research on names. An additional feature of the journal since 1973 is a survey of the onomastic literature published in the Nordic countries during the past year, including contributions on personal and other proper names. |
