For most religious traditions of the world, the subjugation brought about by colonialism and modernity is the most profound challenge ever faced. While many non-western religions did not survive the encounter with European modernity and imperialism, others still struggle to recover some form of self-respect despite the continued hegemonial status of the West.
Postcolonial studies is an academic field in which the world-order brought about by colonialism is scrutinised. The aim of this anthology is to critically discuss some of the consequences that postcolonial perspectives could have for the study of religions. Willy Pfändtner and David Thurfjell are affiliated to the Department for the Study of Religions at Södertörn University in Stockholm, Sweden. The series Studies on Inter-religious Relations is issued in co-operation with different distributors and publishers. It is edited by Ingvar Svanberg (Study of Religions, Södertörn University) and David Westerlund (Study of Religions, Södertörn University).
