This monograph investigates the dynamic realtionship that unfolded between the majority Christian society and the minority Muslim community in South Africa throughout the twentieth century. Specific attention is given to the period between 1960 and 2000. Before a detailed discussion of the relationship is undertaken, the study brings into view a theoretical frame within which to comprehend this relationship. The book demonstrates how Christian-Muslim relations changed at different historical moments: at one stage reviews the exlusivist nature of the relationship during the early apartheid period and at another it analyses the pluralist position that was espoused during the late apartheid era as well as in post-apartheid time. Since there were a number of individuals and institutions that played a crucial role, the study identifies and analyses an array of important role players and a few significant institutions.
Muhammed Haron is presently Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies at the University of Botswana and Executive Member of the Centre for Contemporary Islam at the University of Cape Town.
