While ’shamanism’ is a term debated in academia, most scholars agree that this ancient religious practice has its origins among native peoples of Siberia. Ruthlessly persecuted in Soviet times, shamanism survived in Tuva, an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation, in Southern Siberia. After the collapse of the Communist ideology, shamanism returned as an accepted ’traditional religion’, in the search for new ethnic identities, and as an everyday practice for problem-solving in the harsh post-Soviet socio-economic climate. Who is to decide whether the new shaman is a ’real’ one? Is it the local users, the national and metropolitan scholars, or the foreign spiritual seekers?

The book is a travelogue written by an anthropologist, on her first journey to Siberia. As this journey unfolds, shamanism emerges as a social field where many interests clash and intertwine, and where definitions of ’shamanism’ become personally and politically contested.

Galina Lindquist has studied neo-shamanism in Scandinavia and folk religious and healing practices in Russia. She is now teaching and doing research at the Department of Social Anthropolgy at Stockholm University.

The series Studies on Inter-religious Relations is issued in co-operation with different distributors and publishers. It is edited by Ingvar Svanberg (Study of Religions, Södertörn University) and David Westerlund (Study of Religions, Södertörn University).
