This is the first full-length study of the South African writer, Joy Packer (190577), whose work included six volumes of memoirs and ten novels.
Packers writing, which was primarily popular in mode, is significant for its treatment of her extensive personal experience of British imperial power in peace and war, and for her attempt to merge the conventions of popular romantic fiction with the polemics of South African liberalism under apartheid. In addition to presenting analyses of Packers main works, this study discusses the ways in which a white South African woman writer endeavoured to come to terms with apartheid from its earliest years to the mid 1970s. John A Stotesbury is a Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Joensuu, Finland.
